Campus Clips: ESPN3 to Carry Sun Belt Football Media Day; ACC Signs 12-Year Deal with Orange Bowl

ESPN3 will carry portions of Sun Belt Conference football media day in New Orleans on July 16. The collaboration with ESPN3 for media day will mark the first time the Sun Belt Conference has distributed the event to a national audience. The event will include interviews with all 10 league head coaches, commissioner Karl Benson’s address to the media, as well as interviews with future Sun Belt coaches Dennis Franchione of Texas State and Bill Curry of Georgia State. Texas State and Georgia State will begin play in the Sun Belt Conference for the 2013 season…

…The Atlantic Coast Conference and the Orange Bowl Committee have agreed to a 12-year deal that will annually feature the ACC champion in the Discover Orange Bowl to be played on New Year’s Day at 1:00 pm beginning after the 2014 season. As part of the new postseason college football arrangement recently announced by the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee, the ACC has selected the Orange Bowl as its annual contract bowl partner. If the ACC Champion is identified as one of the top four teams by the Bowl Championship Series selection committee, then that team will participate in the national semifinals and a replacement team from the ACC would participate in the Discover Orange Bowl. In addition to the partnership between the ACC and the Discover Orange Bowl, it’s anticipated that the Orange Bowl will host at least four semifinal games in the new recently announced arrangement by the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee. In the years that the Orange Bowl serves as a semifinal host, the ACC Champion would then participate in one of the three host bowls that will be established as per the direction of the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee…

…In other Orange Bowl news, Notre Dame is interested in a deal that would give the Fighting Irish an automatic landing spot in the game in some seasons in which they are good enough to play in a top-tier bowl but do not make the playoff. A Notre Dame spokesman says in a statement athletic director Jack Swarbrick has had discussions with ACC officials ”relating to the Orange Bowl” and university presidents have been consulted…

…Dan Gavitt has been selected as the NCAA’s vice president of men’s basketball championships. In this new role, Gavitt will set the strategic direction for and oversee the operation and management of the Division I, II and III men’s basketball championships. Gavitt was previously the Big East Conference associate commissioner for men’s basketball, where he served as the primary basketball administrator for the largest and most diverse Division I conference, and principal point of contact for conference member athletic directors, head basketball coaches and game officials…

…According to Dave Fairbank of the Daily Press, the Colonial Athletic Association should announce its realignment plan in the coming weeks. The departures of VCU, Old Dominion and Georgia State leave the CAA with nine all-sports members. The football league is down to seven schools, with ODU, Georgia State and Rhode Island headed elsewhere.
