Sony To Stop Making Optical Drives

eetindia.co.in (EE Times India) reports that Sony Corp. is planning to end its optical disc drives business. Sony Optiarc Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary that produces CD and DVD drives used in PCs, will cease operations by March of next year, reported The Asahi Shimbun.

Optiarc, which holds a 10-15 per cent share of the optical drive market, was founded in 2006 as a joint venture between Sony and NEC, and became Sony’s 100 per cent subsidiary in 2008.
