AJA’s FS2 Dual Channel Frame Syncs Hit Home Run for Ole Miss

Ole Miss Sports Productions is responsible for all internal video production and in-stadium video broadcast needs for The University of Mississippi’s football, baseball and basketball teams.

On gamedays Shane Sanford, the Manager of Creative Services, relies on AJA’s FS1 and FS2 frame synchronizers to take incoming footage from a variety of sources, in a variety of formats, and instantly homogenize signals to 720p for live broadcast on the stadium jumbotron.

“I’ve worked with AJA gear for a long time and as far as I’m concerned, AJA products are rock solid,” said Sanford. “We use AJA’s FiDO transmitters and receivers for fiber needs, the up/down converters, and audio embedders and disembedders, and they’re all fabulous – so there was no question about which frame syncs we were going to get.”

Sanford runs a 4-camera HD shoot, and also receives additional camera feeds from various local and national networks who are on site to broadcast the games. His team uses two FS2s to take all incoming footage and convert it to 720p for the jumbotron, and one FS1 to fuel the stadium’s “crowd cameo” – a tool where fans can send in photos of themselves to be shown on the big screen during the events. All footage aired on the jumbrotron is live except for replays, with most sporting events capturing at least 2-4 hours worth of footage. After the events, Sanford’s crew uses the footage to produce documentary-style behind-the-scenes programming that airs across the Southeast.

“The beauty of the FS2 is it takes in anything and spits out whatever we need. When everything we’re doing is live and we’ve got all these different feeds to watch, it’s comforting to know that we have an efficient and reliable product on our hands,” said Sanford.

AJA’s FS1 and FS2 universal frame synchronizer/converters pack powerful hardware conversion technology to offer the ultimate flexibility and quality for any workflow. AJA’s FS2 builds on the success of the FS1 by adding dual channel and processing feaures in an 1RU form factor. The FS2 also adds 3G-SDI I/O, HDMI I/O with Optical Fiber I/O options as well as optional Dolby-E encoding.
