Globosat Credits TSL on Installation of SporTV Facilities During London Games

TSL, a systems integrator for the broadcast industry, has been credited by Brazilian Network giant, Globosat, following SporTV’s highly successful coverage of the London 2012 Olympics.

Owned by Globosat, SporTV is Brazil’s most popular sports channel and covers more than 4000 events, transmitting more than 30 live sports categories each year.

TSL systems integrator had just 6 weeks to install Globosat’s SporTV temporary OB facility, which included a full-spec HD/SD gallery and control room housing 9 operators, 3 Final Cut Pro edit suites and a 3-camera ‘glass’ studio.

TSL delivered a full-spec temporary OB facility for SporTV’s Olympic coverage into the 19th floor of Lund Point, a block of 1960s council flats, just outside the Olympic Park; the same building in which the BBC set up one of its main Olympic broadcast studios.

Following a pre-build of the facility at TSL’s headquarters in Maidenhead (UK), the internationally renowned systems integrator had just 6 weeks to install the facility on location, which included a full-spec HD/SD gallery and control room housing 9 operators, 3 Final Cut Pro edit suites and a 3-camera ‘glass’ studio.

Constructed at such a highly unusual location, Globosat and TSL met with some unique challenges: “Physical limitations, Asbestos, structural floor loading, fire proofing, power and zero tolerance deadlines were just some of the issues we had to overcome”, explains Nigel England, TSL Project Manager.

TSL also built Globosat’s broadcast hub in the International Broadcast Centre (IBC), equipped with a single camera studio and edit suite where material selection took place. Throughout the 14 day world event, Globosat’s IBC hub received 56 incoming video feeds from the Olympic Broadcasting Service (OBS). Four SD/HD channels were fed back to SporTV’s base in Rio de Janeiro, with each showing some 15+ hours of unique content per day. A further eight feeds were directed to the Glass Studio at Lund Point.

“TSL accommodated our need for additional facilities – even after the Olympics had started. I would recommend TSL,” stated Alan Murakami, technical development coordinator for Globosat.

Globosat’s 7 venue production systems were also installed by TSL to enable SporTV to record its own material from the various Olympic sites, namely Earls Court, North Greenwich, Horse Guard Parade, Wembley Stadium, Crystal Palace, the Aquatics Centre and the Olympic Stadium itself. At times, there was upwards of 60 Globosat journalists covering the games.
