IBC2012: Coming Off Olympics Peak, iStreamPlanet Joins the Cloud Club

iStreamPlanet entered IBC2012 on a hot streak following the mass deployment of its technology and services at the London Olympic Games. iStreamPlanet worked with Haivision to develop the “Go Live Package” that powered more than 6,300 hours of streamed Olympics content for rightsholding broadcasters from around the world.

But iStreamPlanet is not just sitting on its Olympics laurels at IBC; the company announced plans to move its portfolio of workload products to the cloud, as well as to develop new cloud-based offerings. And while the term cloud has been repeated by hundreds of exhibitors throughout the halls of IBC over the past few days, iStreamPlanet promises that its plans go well beyond just buzzwords.

“With everyone talking about the cloud, one of the biggest things that customers want to know is, what can you save me in terms of time and cost savings,” says Robin Cole, VP, Product & Services Marketing. “We believe that, with our cloud-based media-workload portfolio of products, we can do exactly that: significantly cut down on time and money spent.”

With the move, iStreamPlanet aims to meet the growing demand for live events, live linear channels, and on-demand media assets across an ever increasing number of IP-connected devices at a lower price point than in the past.

iStreamPlanet’s efforts in the cloud rest primarily on three products: Director 5 for VOD media-processing, AMSF (advanced metadata-services framework) for developing multiplatform streaming applications, and a yet-to-be-released overarching cloud-based product dubbed Aventus.

“We will be doing an early-adopter program later this year, but we are talking to folks about it here under NDA,” says Cole. “That is going to be the full workload product based on the cloud and designed specifically for the cloud — not ported, not adapted, designed specifically for that application.”

As for Director 5, the VOD media-processing workflow is capable of scaling to support up to 1,000 concurrent encode and transcode jobs. Currently offered in a private cloud environment at the U.S.-based Switch SuperNAP, the largest data center in the world, Director 5 allows users to pay only for what they use. The product uses advanced virtualization technologies running on high-capacity hardware that is provisioned when needed and automatically removed when no longer necessary.

Director 5 is built on cloud technology from CloudSigma, which has a presence in the Switch SuperNAP data center and in the Europe-based Interxion data center — both of which are also iStreamPlanet infrastructure partners.

AMSF is designed to provide device-customizable Electronic Programming Guide (EPG) and TV/VOD metadata, authentication, authorization, and ID federation for live and on-demand streaming of content for OTT devices. AMSF is intended to speed time to market for content owners looking to create applications in a secure, consistent manner across a number of IP-connected devices, including smartphones, tablets, and OTT devices, such as game consoles and set-top boxes.

Director 5 and AMSF will be commercially available later this year, with Aventus and other cloud-based products likely coming in 2013.
