College Venue Renovation Preview, Part 2

As college football season approached, venues across the country were hurriedly preparing for opening day. From new scoreboards and revamped control rooms to full-fledged renovations and retrofits, SVG has college football venues covered. Part 2 of College Venue Renovation Preview features TCU, LSU, University of South Carolina, and Washington State University.

Amon G. Carter Stadium
Texas Christian University
TCU’s Amon G. Carter Stadium recently hosted its first game following a $164 million renovation, the venue’s first major renovation in more than 50 years. The rebuild improved accessibility and crowd flow, enhanced seating for better views of the Horned Frogs, and revamped concession areas, elevators, restrooms, and lighting. Originally built in 1930, the stadium also received a new press box.

In addition, the renovation has added suites, club seats, and improved fan amenities, such as new seating, wider concourse, handicapped-accessible areas, and escalators.

The rebuild began on the west side and north end zone prior to the 2010 season; east-side renovations began after the 2011 season. Renovations were completed in time for 2012 season.

Tiger Stadium
Louisiana State University
LSU’s Tiger Stadium has a whole new look for the 2012 season, including a lighting system that bathes the stadium’s north end in purple and gold and lights the “LSU” on the north scoreboard.

Prior to the 2011 season, more than 400 windows were replaced on the north end. For the 2012 season, crews added 10-ft.-tall illuminated letters spelling “Tiger Stadium” below the west upper deck and a new west-side portal gating system. The Scott Moran National Championship Plaza, which includes plaques honoring LSU’s All-Americans and College Football Hall of Fame Members and is named for a Tiger Athletic Foundation supporter, was ready in time for the Sept. 1 home opener.

According to the university, the foundation paid for the renovations; no public funding or student fees were used.

Williams-Brice Stadium
University of South Carolina
The University of South Carolina has debuted the third-largest video board in the SEC, as well as a tailgating area across the street from Williams-Brice Stadium. The board cost $6.5 million and the tailgating area cost $30.5 million, $15 million of which was used to purchase the 52 acres of land.

Measuring 36 ft. high and 124 ft. wide, the board is the 11th-largest in college football. The high-definition LED video board features 720×2472 resolution. Eight HD cameras located around the stadium feed content to the board, including instant video replays, graphics, and game statistics.

To accommodate the massive screen, the broadcast infrastructure of Williams-Brice Stadium was overhauled, with 2.4 miles of video cable, more than 10,000 ft. of network cable, and more than 6,000 ft. of audio cable installed. In the rack room, 144 strands of single-mode and 48 strands of multimode fiber-optic cable connect the control room to other parts of the stadium, as well as to the university’s main campus infrastructure.

Martin Stadium
Washington State University
WSU has unveiled a new press box, club lounge, suites, and premium seating in the south side of Martin Stadium. The upgrade, which cost $65 million, upped the capacity in the Pac-12’s smallest football stadium from 32,248 to 33,522.

The renovation, which was completed prior to the 2012 season, is the first phase in a two-phase renovation that includes a football operations facility. The facility is projected to cost $15 million.

However, plans have not yet been finalized for the west-end building. WSU is waiting for Pac-12 Networks to finalize deals with targeted distributors in order to be sure of the revenue it will receive.
