SMPTE Names Wendy Aylsworth as Society’s First Woman President

The Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers (SMPTE), the professional membership association and worldwide leader in motion-imaging standards and education for the media, entertainment, communications, and technology industries, today announced its newly elected officers and governors, including the election of the Society’s first female president, Wendy Aylsworth. All officers will assume office Jan. 1, 2013.

Aylsworth, who was also the first woman to serve in her current capacity as SMPTE executive vice president, is the senior vice president of technology at Warner Bros. She previously served a two-year term as SMPTE engineering vice president, during which time she worked to streamline and further systemize the organization’s standards-making process and initiated pivotal cross-industry collaboration on the 3D to the Home and Broadband standards. As SMPTE president, she will serve a two-year term, and succeeds outgoing president, Pete Ludé, senior vice president of engineering at Sony Corporation.

Other incoming SMPTE officers announced today include Robert P. Seidel, vice president of engineering and advanced technology for the CBS television network, who will serve as executive vice president for a two-year term; Matthew S. Goldman, senior vice president of TV compression technology at Ericsson, who will serve as financial vice president for a one-year term; Patrick D. Griffis, senior director of technology strategy in the office of the chief technology officer for Dolby, who will serve as education vice president for a two-year term; and, Ann Marie Rohaly, director of accessibility policy and standards for Microsoft Corporation, who will serve as secretary/treasurer for a two-year term.

“With this election, the Society renews its emphasis on the three pillars of membership, standards and education; signifying the Society’s focus on supporting a diverse, worldwide engineering workforce that can keep pace with rapid proliferation of technologies in our digital media ecosystem”, said Barbara Lange, executive director of SMPTE.

Lange also cited the work of the previous SMPTE Board under Ludé.

“Pete has championed a number of high-visibility SMPTE initiatives, including the successful launch of its digital library, the execution of Society’s first European conference, and renewed focus on new media technologies,” she said. “On behalf of our members we thank him for his vision, leadership, and commitment.”

2013-2014 Governors Elected 
The Society today also detailed the roster for its regional governors who will each serve two-year terms.Governors announced today include Pierre Marion, director, media engineering, productions, French services, CBC/Radio-Canada, as the Canadian regional governor; William T. Hayes, director of engineering and technology, Iowa Public Television, as the central region governor; Peter Wharton, director of sales, Americas, file-based solutions, Miranda Technologies, Inc. as the eastern region governor; Leon Silverman, general manager, Digital Studio, The Walt Disney Studios, and Clyde Smith, senior vice president technology, FOX Networks eand operations, as Hollywood region governors; William C. Miller, president, Miltag Media Technology, LLC, as the New York region governor; T.J. Scott, Jr., senior account manager, Grass Valley USA, as the Southern region governor; Sara J. Kudrle, senior software engineer, Miranda Technologies, as the Western region governor; and  Angelo D’Alessio, director, engineering and new media applications for the Center for Media Accessibility (CMA) as governor for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Central and South America.
