SVG Year in Review: May

May served as a precursor to what would be a very busy summer in the sports world.

NBC Sports Group produced two legs of the Triple Crown in May: the Kentucky Derby (and streamed on NBCSports.com in conjunction with iStreamPlanet) and the Preakness Stakes, as well as the Players Championship.

ESPN and Turner Sports worked with the NCAA to give the Spring Championships unprecedented exposure both on television and online.

The SMPTE Forum on Emerging Media Technologies in Geneva, Switzerland, took a look at the future of the broadcast and content creation and delivery industries. Among the topics discussed were NHK’s plans to produce the Olympics in its Super Hi-Vision format (8K video and 22.2-channel surround sound), the emerging bandwidth crunch, and 4K and 3D roadmaps for the future.

Two weeks later, SVG had an emerging-technology-focused event of its own with the aptly named FutureSPORT Summit in New York. DIRECTV EVP/CTO Romulo Pontual kicked off the Summit with an opening keynote, followed by a full day of sessions addressing next-gen technologies in areas ranging from file-transport and transmission to 4K production to the 3D workflows to high-speed camera systems. The Champions League Final was as big a draw as ever here in the states, as Fox Sports rolled out the red carpet for the pinnacle of European pro soccer. SVG Europe also provided an inside look at Sky Deutschland’s domestic and world feed efforts at the Final.

MLB shuffled its rights deals, as Turner grabbed the new Wild Card games and MLB Network entered the playoff picture for the first time with two division series games.

The month of May finished up with the start of the Stanley Cup Final, marking the culmination NBC’s multi-network and multi-platform NHL campaign throughout the season. In addition, NHL Network took care of the Media Day coverage, while the league amped up its “Because It’s the Cup” marketing efforts.

Other May highlights included, the unique production workflows of the newly launched Fox Sports San Diego, MLB Network’s Strike Zone, UF’s Gatorvision building out a new campus-wide infrastructure, and HBO Sports’ Mayweather/Cotto fight coverage.

And not to be forgotten in a very busy May, WFTDA.tv looked to bring Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby into mainstream with a new streaming service.
