SVG Year in Review: August

Although August was dominated by a tiny little event in London, there was plenty of other sports video news and major events throughout the month, including the PGA Championship, the launch of the Pac 12 Network (or all seven Pac 12 Networks), and the kickoff of the college football season.

CBS and Turner Sports split duties at the PGA championship, with TNT Carrying the first two days of the tournament as well as PGA Championship LIVE on PGA.com and CBS handling the bulk of the linear telecast production.

College conference and school networks have become the dream and the norm in recent years, but the Pac-12 took it to the next level by launching not only a single conference network but an additional six regional networks for their member schools. As fast as the network’s San Francisco home base was erected, it was equally advanced technically thanks largely to the efforts of systems integrator Diversified Systems. However, it wasn’t just the broadcast center that made the Pac-12 a trailblazer; handling remote productions at 12 schools across the western half of the U.S. was no easy task – just ask SVP of production and operations Leon Schweir. Thankfully, MIRA Mobile had a full army of trucks to provide the bulk of the networks’ productions.

The Pac-12 wasn’t the only conference getting started in August, however, as the college football season kicked off. CBS took the action across the pond with a debut in Ireland, while ESPN 3D went all in on its 5D production model (2D-3D hybrid model that shares resources) for the football season.
