NRK starts synthetic audio subtitles for foreign TV shows

Telecompaper.com reports that Norwegian cable company Altibox said that national public broadcaster NRK is introducing a synthetic audio subtitle service for foreign language broadcasts, aimed at people with visual impairments. It said subtitles will be read out loud synthetically on the new HD channels NRK1 Lydtekst, NRK2 Lydtekst and NRK Super/NRK3 Lydtekst and these will be included in its basic packages from 15 January. The service enables customers to follow foreign language television programmes without having to read the Norwegian subtitles. It said there are 380,000 people in Norway who have visual impairments or other difficulties with reading.
