AT&T Stadium morphing into flashy TV set for awards show

DallasNews.com reports that workers are tearing AT&T Stadium apart.

The turf is gone and the field is littered with heavy equipment as the football arena is transformed into a concert venue for the 50th anniversary of the Academy of Country Music Awards.

Even the Dallas Cowboys’ famously massive video screens won’t be enough for the April 19 extravaganza. Workers are adding LED displays that will offer additional views of the stage shows.

“We’re coming in, seeing what their layout is and taking what we can to turn it into an entertainment venue,” said Kate Kramer, the academy’s manager of operations and events. “It was a blank slate. No one had done it before.”

The preparations include 150,000 square feet of black cloth that has been connected to 5 miles of Velcro to block out natural light when the TV cameras roll.

The awards are traditionally presented at the 12,000-seat MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. But for the half-century celebration, organizers brought the show to Arlington to accommodate a bigger crowd.
