Telstra Selects Ericsson’s CDN Solution for Network Delivered Media

Telstra has selected the Ericsson Media Delivery Network solution as a fully managed CDN service. The service will cost-effectively provide capacity for growth in IP video from the media properties owned and served by the Telstra network. Telstra and Ericsson to contribute to the evolution and optimization of media delivery over operator networks.

Ericsson’s Consumer Lab research shows that across the globe three quarters of us regularly watch streamed video at home and on the move. Globally, Ericsson predicts that this year more people will watch streamed on-demand video on a weekly basis than broadcast TV. To address growth in video traffic operators are seeking to access the best technology to most efficiently deliver content to users, whilst improving customer experience.

In response to demand growth in IP video, Telstra will be the first operator in the world to deploy the Ericsson Media Delivery Network solution as a fully-managed CDN service as part of their multifaceted approach to both drive cost leadership and a superior customer experience.

Telstra and Ericsson will work collaboratively to develop services and capabilities that drive value from fixed and wireless networks and deliver richer customer experience on services such as Bigpond streaming channels.

Ove Anebygd, Vice President and Head of Solution Area Media, Ericsson said: “We have specifically designed all parts of our Media Delivery Network solution to allow operators to assume an even more active role in the evolving media value chain, enabling them to more readily extend value into new collaborative and media-centric services. We will work collaboratively with Telstra to effectively leverage both the Media Delivery Network solution and their core network functionality to develop strategic content delivery and optimization services, supporting the growth of Telstra’s media business.”

Ericsson’s Media Delivery Network solution allows more efficient delivery of content to the edge of fixed and wireless networks. It works closely with other network technologies such as LTE broadcast, helping to maximize Telstra’s network superiority and continue to improve efficiency in the delivery of video across a range of platforms and devices as demand continues to grow

On May 11, Telstra and Ericsson will present at the Content Delivery Summit 2015 on exploration of hybrid delivery methods and blended services, including CDN as a service, enabling operators to address the greater picture and turn disruptive trends in traffic into profitable business growth.

Salman Taj, Head of Technology, Content Delivery , Ericsson will be discussing these forward-looking media-centric services, exploring the possibility of rich, collaborative business models in this new frontier of content delivery.
