Sportvision sold to fellow TV graphics powerhouse SMT

ChicagoBusiness.com reports that one of Chicago’s most prominent sports technology companies has been acquired by a fellow industry giant in a deal that creates a new behemoth of sports television graphics.

Durham, N.C.-based SMT, one of the leaders in developing real-time graphics used on television during live sporting events, has purchased Ravenswood-based Sportvision, a pioneer of some of the most recognizable innovations in live sports coverage.

Under the deal, Sportvision will be rebranded under the SMT banner and will close its administrative office in Chicago, though its research and development facility in Fremont, Calif. will continue operation. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Sportvision rose to prominence as a leader in sports TV graphics over the past two decades with such broadcast innovations as the “glowing puck” for the NHL, the yellow first down line during NFL broadcasts, pitch and strike-zone tracking in Major League Baseball and graphics that make cars in Nascar races easier to follow. It also cut deals with many pro sports leagues to set up patented camera technology in arenas and stadiums to generate the graphics, and the business poured in from media giants that carry live sporting events who were looking to enhance their game broadcasts.
