Persistent Stream Key, Crossposting Among New Facebook Live Features Aimed at Publishers

In just over two years, Facebook Live has seen 3.5 billion broadcasts on its platform

There’s little denying that, in its short lifespan, Facebook Live has made a dramatic impact on how networks, leagues, teams, and publishers view video and the potential for their content’s direct connection with viewers and fans. In just over two years since it’s full roll out, more than 3.5 billion broadcasts have graced the platform. Many of them are coming from major sports brands who view the platform as a direct connection to their fans.

“We’ve encountered challenges and learned a lot,” said Erin Connolly, lead product manager, Facebook Live, Facebook, during a keynote presentation at last week’s Streaming Media East show, “but Live has shown us how truly community-driven and social the video experience on Facebook can be. Today, Live is a building block of all of our Facebook video products, and we’re still just at the beginning of Live’s journey.”

As part of her presentation, Connolly detailed some changes that many who produce live video for Facebook Live might find interesting. Among them were the introduction of a persistent stream key for publishers on FB Live and the full flexibility of live crossposting.

Numerous sports publishers, including the World Surf League and Pac-12 Networks, have found success in crossposting FB Live programs to multiple relevant pages and communities.

Connolly also noted that Facebook is testing a feature to allow viewers to rewind FB Live while a broadcast is still live. Although it impacts the viewer more than the producer, publishers can take some solace in knowing that their fans have the ability to catch up on their own time even if a long live streaming is still active.

Facebook is also discussing “Watch Party,” in which group members can watch a video and share commentary in real time on prerecorded video. A moderator can even add to a playlist for playback.
