Cisco Makes Several Announcements to Enhance Cloud Solutions, IP Network

Cisco unveiled the Cisco Cloud-Native Broadband Router, offering cable operators a new approach to support core broadband routing functions and simplify network operations. In addition, SKBroadband announced that it has succeeded in implementing DOCSIS 3.1 broadband technology to enhance its cable infrastructure to offer high-quality video, high-speed data and OTT services. Also, Teleste Corporation revealed that its Remote PHY-based intelligent node, AC9100 Neo RPD, has been implemented by Telia. Teleste’s node is in operation in Telia’s live network alongside Cisco’s cBR-8 CCAP core. The implementation shows that the Remote PHY (R-PHY) distributed access technology is ready for operators who wish to safely invest in future development of their networks and services.

Cisco Prepares Cable Operators for Multi-cloud World with New Cloud Native Broadband Router
A cloud- and IP-based cable network offers the potential to launch new services in a fraction of the time it takes today, while using resources more efficiently. It helps to reduce scaling issues associated with traditional hardware, and it minimizes requirements for space, power, cooling, and on-site maintenance.

The Cisco Cloud-Native Broadband Router is a containerized, full software rewrite of converged cable access platform (CCAP) services, built as a set of microservices using standard tools such as Kubernetes for container orchestration and Docker for creating, deploying, and operating containerized applications.

Primary attributes include:

  • Composable: Designed from the ground up as a composition of multiple services that are elastic, resilient, and flexible to support multi-cloud architectures
  • Containerized software architecture: Open standards-based, modular software for rapid and agile feature development and deployment
  • Automation and analytics: Ready to transform network operations with real-time monitoring, analysis, and remediation, including Cisco Crosswork Network Automation

SKBroadband Sets Speed Record in Korea with Its Gigabit Broadband Service Powered by Cisco
DOCSIS 3.1 is the next-generation hybrid fiber coax (HFC) standard that improves frequency efficiency and greatly increases cable network capacity to support demand for more Internet video and the growth of connected devices. SKBroadband successfully rolled out the world’s first DOCSIS 3.1 downstream and upstream pilot service in the Anyang area in Gyeonggi Province and the Gwangju area in Jeollanam Province in November 2017. Using the Cisco cBR-8 converged broadband router, SKBroadband hit a record speed of 4 Gigabits per second (Gbps) in downstream and 1Gbps in upstream. The company expects to roll out a large-scale service deployment in the second half of 2018.

The Cisco cBR-8 is designed from the ground up for DOCSIS 3.1, featuring support for future advanced technologies like Full Duplex DOCSIS (FDX), Infinite DOCSIS, and SDN-based orchestration. With this advanced cable technology, SKBroadband will be able to provide high-quality services such as Ultra HD, augmented reality and virtual reality, while laying the infrastructure foundation for the forthcoming IoT era. SKBroadband plans to further expand the bandwidth of its HFC coaxial cable network to ten Gbps downstream and five Gbps upstream by introducing more leading-edge DOCSIS technology in the future.

Telia to Use Next-generation Remote PHY Technology from Teleste and Cisco to Improve IP Network Capacity
Due to the active support of the vendor community and ongoing interoperability efforts, R-PHY technology has rapidly evolved as a solution for improved scale, flexibility, and performance in cable access networks. With the technology, operators can significantly add performance to their networks in order to answer to the accelerating demand for more and more broadband speed and capacity.

Teleste will showcase its R-PHY technology at ANGA COM 2018, taking place from June 12-14 in Cologne, Germany. Visitors to our stand, stand G31 in Hall 7, will be able to see a demonstration of the AC9100 Neo RPD, as well as the DAN300, the latest newcomer to our portfolio of R-PHY devices. DAN300 will also be put on display live at Cisco’s stand, stand E20, connected to the Cisco cBR-8 CCAP platform as a part of their Open RPD environment.
