VITAC Becomes Pre-Approved Captioning Vendor California Community Colleges

VITAC announced that the company is now a pre-approved vendor for the Distance Education Captioning and Transcription (DECT) grant for the California Community Colleges system.

The grant enables California Community Colleges (CCC) to expand their video accessibility efforts by providing funding for live and pre-recorded captioning and transcription as a means of enhancing access for all students in distance education courses.

Funding for the grant has been authorized by the California Community Colleges chancellor’s office to aid California Community Colleges in serving disabled student populations and the general public by ensuring the accessibility of aural information.

The funding supports captioning and transcription of online courses, hybrid courses, telecourses, and live classes that utilize web-based content delivery — enabling them to be accessible to all students as well as compliant with federal and state laws.

VITAC is recognized as an approved vendor for live, real-time captioning, which includes the real-time captioning of classes, lectures, and podcasts that are delivered live via webcast, broadcast, Internet TV, and other means.

“VITAC is the leader and gold standard in the captioning industry, and has been for more than three decades,” says P. Kevin Kilroy, VITAC’s Chief Executive Officer. “Our captioning solutions include the most highly trained, qualified, and experienced professional captioners in the industry, supported by a team of highly skilled engineers, schedulers, and production coordinators. These exceptionally talented and dedicated professionals ensure that all of the accessibility services we provide are delivered with the most robust, scalable, and dependable technology enabled services in the industry. The commitment and dedication provided by VITAC and its hundreds of skilled men and women are the keys to enhanced accessibility — and ‘Accessibility for Life’ for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is our passion and mission.”

California Community Colleges is the largest system of higher education in the nation, with 2.1 million students attending 114 colleges, and provides workforce training, certificate and degree programs, and preparation for transfer to four-year institutions, offering more than 10,000 online courses, with distance learning representing the fastest growing segment of CCC enrollment.
