Dolby Atmos Facilitates Sound Production for WOWOW’s Broadcast of the 2018 Rakuten Japan Open

WOWOW, Japan’s leading premium pay TV broadcaster, will broadcast the men’s finals of the 2018 Rakuten Japan Open tennis tournament on October 7 at the Aeon Cinema Makuhari New City in theaters equipped with Dolby Atmos. The invite-only event is Japan’s first live broadcast utilizing Dolby Atmos 3D surround technology in theaters.

The initiative aims for the development of live services utilizing next-generation audio technology. The WOWOW broadcast team will broadcast live from the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza and transmit 3D surround audio to the Dolby Atmos screen in Makuhari, working closely with Live Viewing Japan Co., Ltd., and Dolby Japan Co., Ltd. Select press will be invited to see the system WOWOW has developed with its partners for the live broadcast.

Dolby Atmos provides realism and a powerful viewing experience not only in theaters, but also at home and on mobile by enabling sound to move around and above the spectator. Content providers all over the world utilize Dolby Atmos and the range of content covered spreads out from movies to drama series and live sport. Devices such as television sets, surround systems, soundbars, PCs, tablets, and smartphones supporting Dolby Atmos provide easy access to a 3D aural experience.
