TVU Network Facilitates Multi Camera Broadcast From Above and Below Ground

TVU Networks was chosen by Moscow’s Transport Department to deliver a broadcast to mark the eighth Moscow Urban Forum 2018, held in July of this year. TVU Networks solutions were used to facilitate live interviews with public officials from two locations, from a studio located in the Forum venue at the Park Zaryadye cultural center near the iconic Kremlin and Red Square, and from a moving carriage on the Moscow Metro’s Circle Line, 84m below ground.

In total, eight hours of content was live streamed to a dedicated YouTube channel accessed by a global audience. The production team needed to undertake a seamless, multi-camera broadcast between the two locations, with trouble-free switching between cameras to maintaining high-quality images and sound from start to finish.

Transport Department chose TVU Networks’ proven TVU Router, which was connected to Moscow Metro’s WiFi network. To ensure even higher reliability, the TVU Router was coupled with SIM cards to deliver unbroken connectivity for the broadcasts. TVU Transceivers were deployed to handle both incoming and outgoing signals, with the powerful TVU Grid IP-based content exchange solution ensuring seamless switching between live feeds.

“We wanted to do something ambitious to mark eight years of the Moscow Urban Forum and so planned this exciting live broadcast. The biggest challenge was ensuring that connectivity and reliable bandwidth were maintained across the remote locations — including the moving carriage on the Circle Line — to deliver a flawless stream to viewers,” says Ekaterina Fadeeva, Managing director of the Moscow Metro Media Center. “We needed a solution that had the flexibility and reliability to turn our vision into reality. With its combination of solutions, TVU Networks met all our requirements, with no compromise on the quality of the final images and zero delays.”

TVU Router provided the Transport Department team with a portable broadband internet access point delivering up to 200Mbps of secure, reliable, high-speed and untethered Internet connectivity wirelessly. TVU Networks’ proprietary Inverse StatMux Plus technology ensured the added stability and reliability needed for this innovative project.

TVU Transceivers enabled the production team to leverage powerful professional video hardware decoders, specifically designed for the centralized viewing, to control and distribute the live video content. Together the two systems created a bidirectional live stream between the interviews taking place on the Circle Line and the studio at the Moscow Urban Forum. TVU’s powerful IP-based video switching solution, TVU Grid, was able to ensure smooth routing of the live video streams with ultra-low latency (just a one second delay) over the two signal lines to the studio.

“We are very proud to have collaborated with Moscow’s Transport Department on such an innovative project. The challenging nature of a delivering feeds from two locations — one of which was in constant motion — highlights the versatility needed for wireless live video contribution,” says Matt McEwen, VP of Product Management at TVU Networks. “The TVU Router provides robust and reliable connectivity in any situation and when combined together with the TVU Transceiver and TVU Grid, delivers uncompromising performance, features and picture quality. Our solutions ensure that broadcasters are free to innovate without worrying about what this means for the quality of the final output.”
