40th-Annual Sports Emmy Awards: ESPN, NBC Sports Group Reign While World Series on Fox Takes Top Prize

ESPN’s K Zone 3D picks up Wensel Technical Achievement Award

ESPN and NBC Sports Group led the way with eight victories apiece at the 40th-annual Sports Emmy Awards on Monday night at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City.

Fox Sports Media Group did well for itself, too, earning five statuettes, including the night’s top award, Outstanding Live Sports Special, for its coverage of the 2018 World Series.

NBC’s haul was buoyed by three trophies for its coverage of the PyeonChang Winter Olympic Games. ESPN claimed the prestigious George Wensel Technical Achievement Award for the second straight year, this year for its K Zone 3D technology used on its coverage of Major League Baseball.

ESPN continued to dominate the technical side of this year’s Sports Emmys, winning both the Outstanding Technical Team Remote (for its US Open tennis championship operation) and Outstanding Technical Team Studio (for College GameDay). The sports-media giant also claimed victory in Outstanding Live Graphic Design for its presentation of the NFL Draft.

Christian Cokas, associate director, software engineering, ESPN, accepted the prestigious George Wensel Technical Achievement Award for its deployment of K Zone 3D technology on Major League Baseball coverage.

Fox Sports again flexed its audio muscles, earning the Outstanding Live Event Audio/Sound Emmy for NASCAR on Fox and the Outstanding Post-Produced Audio/Sound for NASCAR Race Hub.

Among other notable live event productions celebrated were NBC’s Sunday Night Football (Outstanding Live Sports Series), CBS Sports’ coverage of the AFC Championship Game (Outstanding Playoff Coverage), Turner Sports’ production of Inside the NBA on TNT (Outstanding Studio Show – Weekly), ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption (Outstanding Studio Show – Daily), and Telemundo’s 2018 FIFA World Cup (Outstanding Live Sports Coverage in Spanish).

On the digital front, the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Fox was honored with the Outstanding Trans-Media Sports Coverage Award; Turner Sports took the trophy for Outstanding Social TV Experience for its special activations around Inside the NBA on TNT; and The Ringer made a splash, scooping up the Sports Emmy for Outstanding Digital Innovation with its NBA Desktop project.
