MLB Network To Debut New ‘Speed Cam’ on Sunday During Mariners-Angels

Gyroscopic-stabilized camera on a dolly will be placed on tracks on top of the first base dugout

MLB Network will debut “Speed Cam,” a new camera angle, on Sunday’s MLB Network Showcase game telecast featuring the Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels live from Anaheim. Developed specifically for a baseball game production, tomorrow’s game marks the first time a Major League Baseball game broadcast will use this angle provided by a gyroscopic-stabilized camera. Paired with a dolly, “Speed Cam” will be placed on tracks on top of the first base dugout, allowing the camera to move along at a speed in excess of the fastest runner going from home plate to first base. The angle will provide fans with a stronger sense of the speed of the game by providing a field-level camera shot of the action.

“Speed Cam” made its game broadcast debut during MLB Network’s coverage of Vanderbilt against Michigan at the MLB4 Collegiate Tournament this past February in Arizona. Coverage from “Speed Cam” during the Vanderbilt and Michigan game can be viewed here.

“We’re excited at the opportunity to enhance the viewer experience by debuting ‘Speed Cam’ on an MLB Network Showcase production,” said Chris Pfeiffer, MLB Network’s Sr. Coordinating Producer of Remote Events, including Sunday’s telecast. “By using this advanced technology, we’ll be able to show just how fast the game moves, and it’s always advantageous to have another camera angle at our disposal for key moments during the game.” To create “Speed Cam,” Jib Tek LLC combined sophisticated cinema hardware and technology from Sony, Shotover, Agito Trax, Ross Video, Wave Central, Canon and Fujinon.

MLB Network’s Scott Braun and new MLB Network analyst Buck Showalter will call Sunday’s game from MLB Network’s studios in Secaucus, NJ. Tomorrow’s MLB Network Showcase game telecast will be exclusive to markets outside of the Seattle and Los Angeles television territories. MLB Network’s live game schedule continues today with the doubleheader between the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds, beginning at 4:00 p.m. EDT.
