Sennheiser Introduces Evolution Wireless Digital Mic System

App-based operation puts digital wireless audio within reach of any sports production

Introduced yesterday, Sennheiser’s new Evolution Wireless Digital microphone system offers more dynamic range — 134 dB transmitter dynamic range — than any wireless system on the market. It automatically secures the most reliable signal in a matter of seconds and is scalable up 90 channels with just 1.9-ms latency.

What’s particularly notable about the EWD is that its operation is largely app-based. Its Android and iOS-compatible mobile app streamlines setup and operation and eliminates a complicated menu.

Particularly important for entry-level users is that the app will automatically scan the RF environment to find open frequencies and can also set the wireless links at 600-kHz intervals without any frequency calculation. It is therefore able to fit in more frequencies than a standard wireless-microphone system would be able to.

Setup of Sennheiser’s new Evolution Wireless Digital mic system can be accomplished via app.

Described as “an engineer in your pocket,” the Evolution Wireless Digital app guides users through setup in easy steps.

“If you can handle an app, you can handle the RF wireless setup with ease,” says Sennheiser Product Manager Benny Franke, noting that online tutorial videos are available for users.

“An intelligent setup automatically creates reliable wireless connections; no wireless expertise is required,” he explained during a live online product introduction from Germany. “You can name the channels to make it easy to stay organized and have access to all system settings. Bluetooth Low Energy allows remote access to the system and makes synching with the receiver convenient.”

Suitable for Sports Applications

Though aimed primarily at entertainment, corporate, and education markets, the EWD’s simplicity — its automated setup creates reliable connections with minimal time and effort — makes it a good fit for high school and other entry-level sports productions.

“The system is well-suited for sports for high schools and for commentary,” said Oliver Schmitz, product manager, Evolution Wireless Digital, Sennheiser. The new digital wireless system, he added, will be part of a portfolio of products, including newly designed antenna-to-antenna splitters, as well as boosters that offer integration with wireless cameras. “It’s targeted to cover audio and video and tied to the demands [for lower-cost and less-complex] equipment.”

Other notable features include UHF operation, which significantly enhances range, estimated at 100 meters; availability of up to 2,240 selectable frequencies; use of lithium-ion battery packs that can deliver up to 12 hours of operation (up to 8 hours with AA batteries); and 56 MHz of bandwidth that can accommodate up to 90 channels.

Evolution Wireless Digital is available now and can be purchased through pro-audio dealers, including Dale Pro Audio.
