Fremont, California, December 21, 2009 \u2013 The MPEG Industry Forum (MPEGIF), the world\u2019s largest advocacy group for standard\u2019s based digital television technologies, announced today the formation of the 3DTV Working Group and launch of the \u201c3D over MPEG\u201d campaign.\u00a0 The new working group and campaign continue MPEGIF\u2019s successful work in furthering the widespread adoption and deployment of MPEG-related standards including MPEG-4 AVC\/H.264, the Emmy-Award winning video compression technology.<\/p>\n
\u201c3DTV is of keen interest to everyone in the video creation and delivery industries. The challenge we all face is that of sorting through\u00a0the myriad technical options.\u00a0\u00a0Our common goal is\u00a0to create a 3DTV ecosystem that\u00a0delivers great\u00a0new experiences\u00a0to consumers.\u201d says Dr. Sean McCarthy, chair of the newly formed 3DTV Working Group and Fellow of the Technical Staff at Motorola. \u201cThe 3DTV Working Group and the \u20183D over MPEG\u2019\u00a0campaign are designed to provide focus and\u00a0clear information to decision makers.\u00a0 3DTV can be distributed today using MPEG-related standards.\u00a0 Existing broadband and broadcast services and infrastructures are 3D-ready, and ongoing works by standards bodies provide a compelling path for the future evolution of 3DTV.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The 3DTV Working Group will provide a forum for free exchange of information related to this emerging technology, an industry voice advocating the adoption of standards and for consolidating the overall direction of the 3DTV industry.\u00a0 Its focus and constituency will be derived from video service\u00a0providers, consumer electronics manufacturers,\u00a0content owners,\u00a0equipment manufacturers, system integrators, software providers, as well as industry advocacy groups, industry analysts, financial institutions and academic institutes.<\/p>\n
\u201c3D video is showing distinct commercial promise in theatrical releases and could thus transition to the advanced living room to follow High Definition and Surround Sound.
