Peter Jackson Speaks Out on Hobbit: 3D Experience, HFR and More (video)

BSN (BrightSideOfNews.com) reports that over the past couple of days, Theo Valich had the opportunity to see the Hobbit in all available 3D technologies: 3D IMAX (24fps), RealD (24fps) and 3D HFR (48fps). His personal opinion is that while 48 frames per second was really great for the fast-pacing scenes – where we all had to endure tearing in the past, some of regular movements looked artificial and too much sped up.

The movie was shot at 96 fps with two RED Epic cameras (48 frames each), which got reduced to 24fps for the mainstream movie theaters. There were a total of 24 rigs with 48 Epic cameras, for a grand total of around $3M of worth in cameras alone. As such, the movie was naturally smooth in the slow-paced scenes and featured almost traditional “blurrings” or “tearing” when the scene flow too fast for poor 24 frames per second.

During the traditional BNAT (Butt-Numb-a-Thon) film festival held in Austin, TX – Peter Jackson came on stage following the showing of Hobbit in 3D HFR technology and discussed his approach to directing the movie. You can view the 16 minute video by clicking the link below:
