Ex-NHK Official Arrested Over ¥2.8 Million Fraud

the-japan-news.com reports a Jiji Press report that a former official of NHK’s television technology research center was arrested Tuesday for allegedly making a fake purchase order to an audio equipment company.

Kimio Hamasaki, 56, a former chief researcher at the public broadcaster’s Science & Technology Research Laboratories was arrested along with Hiroyasu Sato, 46, a former executive at the audio equipment firm, on suspicion of fraud. Both have admitted the allegations, police sources said.

They are suspected of having conspired in April 2012 to make NHK pay about ¥2.8 million to Sato’s company for nonexistent work by the company.

According to NHK, an in-house investigation revealed that in addition to making the false order, Hamasaki received goods worth millions of yen, including a personal computer and a digital camera, from the audio equipment company.
