SVG, UCLA To Host SportsTechLA; Jan. 20 Event To Look at 3D, Digital Exchange, and More

SVG and UCLA Present SportsTechLA

As the weather in the Northeast is going south, SVG is heading west to California, for its first West Coast event. Join the Sports Video Group on Tuesday Jan. 20, when the University of California at Los Angeles hosts SportsTechLA, a special half-day networking and educational event that will showcase the Pac-10 Conference’s digital game exchange system.

UCLA Video Operations Director Ken Norris, who developed the Pac-10 system, has become one of the nation’s leading gurus in digital game exchange. Coordinators from schools across the country turn to him with questions. Using the Abilene network and a central server that he manages, Norris’s system ensures that all Pac-10 member schools are able to share game tape online, both with other member schools and with upcoming opponents from other conferences.

“The thing that makes this system go is that we’re managing it ourself,” Norris says of the differences between his Pac-10 model and other conference models. “I don’t think the method that we’re using is popular, because someone in the conference has to step up and use the resources on their campus to do what we do.”

On Jan. 20, Norris will share those resources with the sports professionals in attendance at SportsTechLA, offering both a virtual and a walking tour of the system. He will also take part in a panel discussion on the system’s implementation and success.

“I very much look forward to the opportunity to show people the technology that is used in the Pac-10,” Norris says. “We’re proud of what we’ve done.”

SportsTechLA begins at noon with a networking lunch in UCLA’s press room and Hall of Fame, in the J.D. Morgan Center on the Westwood campus. The program will also include panel discussions on 3D HD production and more.
