Students Across the Country Go Behind the Scenes of Top Sporting Events

SVG and member companies Turner Sports, the NBA, the Orland Magic, Fox Sports, and IMS Productions gave more than 20 college students a great way to end the school year by opening their doors and letting students go behind the scenes of a professional sports TV production.

“It was a great experience,” says Steven Amburn, a 2009 graduate of Ball State who toured the Indianapolis 500 alongside Ball State classmates and students and professors from St. Josephs College in Indiana. Ken Gardner of IMS Productions led the tour and students had an opportunity to shadow editors, audio mixers, and others during the event.

Meanwhile, last Thursday students from the Carolina School of Broadcasting went behind the scenes with Fox Sports and learned what it takes to produce the Coca Cola 600 NASCAR race.

And on Tuesday afternoon of this week Tom Sahara of Turner Sports and Rick Price of the Orlando Magic gave students and the sports video team from the University of Central Florida an in-depth tour of the production for the Eastern Conference Finals.

“The feedback from all of the tours was phenomenal,” says Ken Kerschbaumer, SVG Editorial Director who was at the Indy 500 tour. “These events are an important way to open the eyes of broadcasting students to a career in sports. We want to thank all of those who volunteered their time and energy to make these tours possible.”
