Venue News & Notes: London Olympic Stadium Up for Grabs

Premier League soccer team West Ham and American sports and entertainment giant AEG are among those interested in taking over London’s Olympic Stadium after the 2012 Games. The Olympic Park Legacy Company said Monday it had received “global interest across a range of sectors including sports, construction, education, marketing and investment.” The company did not say how many submissions were received by Monday’s deadline or name any of the contenders, but West Ham, U.K. Athletics and AEG have publicly confirmed their interest…

…The long-term viability of Arena looms extraordinarily large in Glendale’s economic-development efforts and claim to fame as Arizona’s sports and entertainment hub. Hence the city’s extraordinary steps to preserve a public asset. The Glendale City Council approved this week the National Hockey League’s request to cover up to $25 million in arena and team operating costs during the Phoenix Coyotes’ 2010-11 season. Just last month, Oakland officials and a group trying to keep the A’s in the city released a study arguing that building a 36,000-seat, $500 million baseball-only stadium in the Jack London Square area would immediately create 1,661 construction jobs in Oakland and generate about $2.6 billion in total economic activity for the city during the next 30 years.
