Live From NAB: Lawo Crosses Into Video

This is a big show for Germany-based console and routing systems maker Lawo. At the company’s booth (#C2046) Lawo North America president Herbert Lemcke ticked off new developments including:

• The introduction of the company’s new SDI-Dock, which incorporates 8 embedders and de-embedders plus 128 audio channels connected through MADI, as well as video processing functions, including color correction, frame sync, and thumbnailing.

• New JADE and Multitrack Editor software products for simplified and more efficient workflow

• The new Version 4.16 software running on the mc²66 MKII broadcast console whose features include the doubling of the channel count so that a full mc² system can offer up to 888 DSP channels.

• Demonstrations of RAVENNA Audio over IP technology including the new RAVENNA HD Core Card, RAVENNA DALLIS Master Card, and the 8-channel RAVENNA I/O modules.

• The all-new Nova29 compact 16-port MADI router on display with transparent signal routing for 1024 x 1024 signals, an integral intercom function.

Lemcke says the the show represents a turning point for both the company and the industry, reflecting ongoing and accelerated convergence between audio and video signal routing and management.

“The SDI Dock is our first real video product,” he said. “We are an audio company but this product falls between the two domains. There is a control interface from the audio side but it can also recall audio parameters and levels for video.”

Lemcke noted that 3G SDI embedders and de-embedders allow the use of any audio signal from up to 8 video signals, as well as the integration of new audio signals into the video signals. Up to 16 audio channels are supported per stream via MADI. “And any video signal can be converted into the relevant professional video format using integrated format converters. Additional features include thumbnails, monitoring functions, quadsplit, and more.”
