Finding Your Footing in the Industry With John Filippelli: A Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame Sit-Down

After the postponement of the physical Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame ceremony in New York City, we honored the nine-person class during a virtual discussion back in December. In this conversation, SVG Editorial Director Ken Kerschbaumer speaks with YES Network’s President of Production & Programming and Executive Producer John Filippelli.

One of the most respected and innovative executives in all of sports television, he has left an indelible mark on both the national and RSN stages. Over his 46-year career, “Flip” has been a gamechanger in production, original programming, and as an architect, leaving a legacy of sustained excellence and consistency at NBC, FOX, ABC/ESPN, The Baseball Network, and the YES Network.

During this chat, Filippelli shares his start in the sports-video-production industry, memorable moments that he produced from the front bench including the famous walk-off home run by Kirk Gibson in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, and how his career was shaped by working with other members of the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame.
