Blackmagic Design Launches New Line of Studio Cameras, HyperDeck Studio Recorders, and Web Presenter 4K Model

Blackmagic Design has unveiled a host of new products, including a new family of Blackmagic studio cameras, a new family of HyperDeck Studio recorders, and the new Blackmagic Web Presenter 4K model – all available immediately.

Blackmagic Design Announces New Blackmagic Studio Cameras

Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Plus

The new compact all-in-one design will help a wider range of live production customers who need cameras with professional features that are also fast to setup on location. The new Blackmagic Studio Cameras include design features such as carbon fiber reinforced polycarbonate and large integrated 7″ viewfinders so they are very light weight making them much easier to transport and setup than large traditional studio cameras.

Blackmagic Studio Cameras are available immediately from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide from $1,295.

Blackmagic Studio Cameras have the same features as large studio cameras, miniaturized into a single compact and portable design. Plus with digital film camera dynamic range and color science, the cameras can handle extremely difficult lighting conditions while producing cinematic looking images. The sensor features an ISO up to 25,600 so customers can create amazing images even in dimly lit venues. Advanced features include talkback, tally, camera control, built in color corrector, Blackmagic RAW recording to USB disks and much more.

Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro

While Blackmagic Studio Camera is designed for live production, it’s not limited to use with a live switcher. That’s because it records Blackmagic RAW to USB disks, so it can be used in any situation where customers use a tripod. The large 7″ viewfinder makes it perfect for work such as chat shows, television production, broadcast news, sports, education, conference presentations and even weddings. The large bright display with side handles, touch screen and physical controls makes it easy to track shots while being comfortable to use for long periods of time.

Large broadcasters use expensive studio cameras that are extremely large, so they’re not very portable. It features a lightweight carbon fiber reinforced polycarbonate body with innovative technology in a miniaturized design. The camera is designed for live production so it’s easy to track and frame shots with its large 7″ viewfinder. The touchscreen has menus for camera settings, and there’s knobs for brightness, contrast and focus peaking. Plus a tripod mount with mounting plate is included for fast setup.

The Blackmagic Studio Camera features gain from -12dB (100 ISO) up to +36dB (25,600 ISO) so it’s optimized to reduce grain and noise in images, while maintaining the full dynamic range of the sensor. The gain can be set from the camera, or remotely from a switcher using the SDI or Ethernet remote camera control.

The amazing 4K sensor combined with Blackmagic generation 5 color science gives customers the same imaging technology used in digital film cameras. The color corrector can even be controlled from the switcher. With 13 stops of dynamic range, the camera has darker blacks and brighter whites, perfect for color correction. The sensor features a resolution of 4096 x 2160 which is great for both HD and Ultra HD work. Plus, all models support from 23.98 fps up to 60 fps.

With the popular MFT lens mount, Blackmagic Studio Cameras are compatible with a wide range of affordable photographic lenses. Photographic lenses are incredible quality because they’re designed for use in high resolution photography. To eliminate the need to reach around to adjust the lens zoom and focus, the optional focus and zoom demands let customers adjust the lens from the tripod handles just like a large studio camera. It gives customers the same feel as an expensive B4 broadcast lens.

The large 7″ high resolution screen will totally transform how customers work with the camera because it’s big enough to make framing shots much easier. On screen overlays show status and record parameters, histogram, focus peaking indicators, levels, frame guides and more. Customers can even apply 3D LUTs for monitoring shots with the desired color and look.

Unlike consumer cameras, the Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro model has SDI connections that include talkback so the switcher operator can communicate with cameras during live events. That means the director can talk to the camera operators to guide shot selection, eliminating the problem where all cameras could have the same shot, at the same time. The talkback connector is built into the side of the camera and supports standard 5 pin XLR broadcast headsets.

Blackmagic Studio cameras have lots of connections for connecting to both consumer and broadcast equipment. All models feature HDMI with tally, camera control and record trigger, so are perfect for ATEM Mini switchers. Customers also get headphone and mic connections, and 2 USB-C expansion ports. The advanced Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro model is designed for broadcast workflows so has 12G-SDI, 10GBASE-T Ethernet, talkback and balanced XLR audio inputs. The 10G Ethernet allows all video, tally, talkback and camera power via a single connection, so setup is much faster. That’s just like a SMPTE fiber workflow, but using standard Category 6A copper Ethernet cable so it’s much lower cost.

Blackmagic Studio Converter

The Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro model supports connecting cameras via a single Ethernet cable. Traditional broadcast studio cameras use SMPTE fiber to communicate and power cameras, however SMPTE fiber is very expensive. Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro model has 10G Ethernet as an alternative to SMPTE fiber so it’s much lower cost. The Ethernet includes all camera video, program return feeds, tally, talkback, camera control and also power. The Blackmagic Studio Converter handles all video conversions at the switcher end plus adds power to the Ethernet cable. That means customers don’t need to connect power to the camera.

The Blackmagic Studio Camera features a high speed USB-C expansion port that allows customers to record to external disks or connect to a wide range of accessories. Plug in an external USB flash disk and the camera can record high quality 12-bit Blackmagic RAW files for later editing and color correction. That means customers can just move the disk to a computer to work, and customers don’t need to waste time with file copying. Plus the USB port will power any phone or disk that’s plugged in.

Some file formats such as H.264 are highly compressed, so add noise and artifacts, causing sensor detail to be lost forever. Blackmagic RAW eliminates this problem so customers get stunning images with incredible detail and rich color throughout the whole post production pipeline. Blackmagic RAW also saves camera settings as metadata so customers can change ISO, white balance and exposure later in DaVinci Resolve. Plus the files are small and fast, so editing responsiveness is incredible.

Blackmagic Studio Cameras include built in microphones so customers get sound included in the design making setup much faster. Plus the built in microphones are shock and wind resistant, so customers get great sound even in tough conditions. There’s also a 3.5mm audio input for connecting video camera microphones as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Because the most common location to place microphones is near to cameras, the Pro model includes the best audio ever designed into a studio camera. The professional 2 channel balanced XLR inputs support +24 dBu line level and have an ultra low noise microphone preamplifier with P48 phantom power alongside an equivalent input noise (E.I.N.) of -131 dBV(A). That’s followed by two 117 dB high dynamic range analog to digital converters, so customers get the high end audio demanded by broadcasters and audio engineers. This means any microphone plugged into the XLR inputs will have a higher level of noise than the camera’s audio.

To allow quick mounting onto tripods and faster setup, all Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K models include a tripod mount with a machined metal design and quick mounting plate. The quick mounting plate allows the camera to slide onto the tripod and customers get forward and rear adjustment of the camera so customers can adjust the position to get the perfect camera balance.

Blackmagic Zoom Demand

Blackmagic Studio Cameras have lots of different power options. All models have a common 12V DC locking power connector so the cable won’t be accidentally pulled out. However if users are using a single Ethernet cable to connect to the Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro model, then the whole camera and its accessories can be powered from the Ethernet connection. The Blackmagic Studio Converter has a large power supply that adds PoE power to the Ethernet cable so customers don’t need any power connection to the camera. That’s a great solution when there’s no power available where the cameras are placed.

The optional zoom and focus demands can be added to turn affordable photography lenses into amazing broadcast lenses. The focus and zoom demands have USB-C connections so they work with all Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K models. Each zoom and focus demand has 2 USB-C ports, so customers can daisy chain them then connect to the camera with a single USB connection. The design has an incredibly precise feel and so customers get very fine lens control, and customers can frame and adjust the lens without taking their hands off the tripod handles.

Blackmagic Focus Demand

With 10G Ethernet on the Pro model, customers can connect all signals to the camera with the one Ethernet IP link connection. That means the camera feed, return program feed, timecode, reference, tally, talkback and control are all sent down the single cable. That’s the same benefits of SMPTE fiber, but the standard 10G copper Ethernet cable is much lower cost. The Blackmagic Studio Converter allows breakout of all the video, audio and talkback connections at the studio end. It also includes a massive power supply that powers the camera down the Ethernet cable, so customers don’t need a power source near the camera.

“These new studio cameras are built on all the knowledge and customer feedback from the original Blackmagic Studio Cameras,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. “These new models are a big step forward and they have been designed to be high end cameras, not entry level cameras. They might be small and self contained, but the features such as the built in 10G Ethernet, low light capability and professional viewfinder design make them very high end cameras for high end work!”

Blackmagic Design Announces New HyperDeck Studio

HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro

The new new family of HyperDeck Studio models that feature better design, upgraded codecs and support for more media types. All models now support record and playback to H.264, ProRes and DNx files, as well as PCM or AAC audio. Plus, all models support SD Cards and UHS-II cards, with the Pro models adding extra SSD support.

HyperDeck Studios are available immediately from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide from $495.

HyperDeck Studio lets customers record broadcast quality video files directly onto SD cards and SSD media. All models now support recording to H.264, Apple ProRes or DNxHD files with either PCM or AAC audio. Plus, the 4K model adds support for H.265 files. For ISO recording, there’s even built-in timecode and reference generators for syncing multiple units. All of these powerful features make the HyperDeck Studio perfect for broadcast, live production or multi screen digital signage.

HyperDeck Studio HD Pro

The new HyperDeck Studio recorders have been totally redesigned with dozens of new features. The advanced models have new broadcast style front panel controls and more connections on the rear panel.

There are four different models of HyperDeck Studio, perfect for all types of work. The 3G-SDI based HD Mini model records and plays H.264, ProRes or DNxHD files onto SD cards, UHS-II cards or external USB disks in SD and HD formats up to 1080p60. The larger HD Plus model adds better transport controls, front panel headphone and speaker, 6G-SDI with fill and key out, SDI monitoring and records H.264 up to 1080p60 or ProRes and DNxHD up to 2160p30. The full rack HD Pro model is the same as the HD Plus model but adds two SSD slots and a machined metal search dial with clutch. The incredibly powerful 4K Pro model records H.264, H.265, ProRes or DNx in SD, HD and Ultra HD in standards up to 2160p60.

HyperDeck Studio features traditional deck style transport controls, including a search dial for jog, shuttle and scroll. The LCD includes monitoring for video, plus audio level meters, selectable between technically accurate VU or PPM ballistics. The combination of familiar VTR style controls with the built in LCD screen makes the HyperDeck Studio incredibly fast to use and very easy to learn.

HyperDeck Studio HD Plus

All HyperDeck Studio models support recording to common SD cards and UHS-II cards so customers don’t need expensive custom media. However, the Pro models also add two SSD slots so customers can use two different types of media. Plus, customers can even record to external USB disks. With H.265, customers can record up to 58 hours in 2160p60 Ultra HD or up to 157 hours of H.264 recording in 1080p59.94 on a 1 TB card. That’s over 6 days of recording in HD using a single 1 TB card.

All HyperDeck Studio models feature dual media slots for non-stop recording. When the recording card becomes full, recording automatically continues onto the next card. That’s perfect when recording long live events because customers can “hot swap” a full card for an empty card while recording continues in the other slot.

HyperDeck Studio HD Mini

HyperDeck supports the most popular codecs in use today. All models include DNx and ProRes file formats. However, all models also include H.264 in quality levels up to full 10 bit 4:2:2 when recording in NTSC, PAL, 720p, 1080p and true 1080i interlaced formats. While the 4K model adds H.265 when recording in Ultra HD. That means customers get tight 60:1 to 285:1 compression ratios for very small files at full broadcast quality. Plus, customers can choose uncompressed PCM audio, or even AAC audio when uploading files to YouTube. All models support both ExFAT and HFS+ disk formats and long duration single file recordings. The Plus and Pro models even support ProRes 4444 allowing fill and key playback.

Depending on the model, HyperDeck Studio features a wide range of video and audio connections such as 3G-SDI, 6G-SDI or 12G-SDI. All models include HDMI for connecting to televisions and projectors. There’s even a dedicated SDI monitoring output on the Pro and Plus models with on screen status. The Pro and Plus models include two SDI outputs so customers can play ProRes 4444 files, allowing simultaneous fill and key output for keying in live production switchers. The 4K model has 10G Ethernet for extremely fast network file copying.

With multi-rate SDI, customers get support for the most popular video standards. SD formats include NTSC and PAL. 720p HD standards include 720p50 and 720p59.94p. 1080i HD interlaced formats include 1080i50 and 1080i59.94. 1080p HD formats include 1080p23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94 and 60p. HyperDeck can even support 1080 PsF formats. On the 4K model, Ultra HD formats up to 2160p60 are supported. Plus, the 4K model supports 2K and 4K DCI rates up to 30p.

For compatibility with a wide range of computer software, HyperDeck Studio features webcam support using the USB connection. The computer is tricked into thinking the HyperDeck is a common webcam, but it’s really a broadcast quality video source. HyperDeck Studio’s USB webcam feature works with any video software including Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Skype, or get live streaming with Open Broadcaster, XSplit Broadcaster and more.

Customers will be ready for the latest feature film workflows with support for advanced HDR standards. When recording, the SDI and HDMI inputs will also automatically detect HDR video standards and then tag the files with the correct HDR information. Static metadata PQ and HLG formats are handled according to the ST2084 standard. HyperDeck Studio Plus and Pro models even allow customers to load a 3D LUT into the monitoring output to add looks or to convert film to video gamma.

HyperDeck Studio includes professional multi channel SDI audio for recording up to 16 channels. There’s extra space on the SDI monitoring status overlay, which allows the audio meter display to show the number of channels customers have enabled all at the same time, and the audio meters will show two, four, eight or 16 channels simultaneously. The audio meters are designed to use the correct ballistics, and customers can change between different VU and PPM meter displays in the LCD menu.

Sometimes their media can fill before customers change to a blank card, or if the card is too slow, then customers can get dropped frames while recording. To eliminate this problem, the HyperDeck Studio 4K Pro model can be upgraded to add an M.2 flash disk to use as a record cache. This eliminates any potential speed problem if the user tries to use cheap media or external disks, because the cache will automatically take over and record any content the media was not fast enough to capture. Even if a card fills, recording will continue to use the cache. The cache even lets customers record formats that are too fast for the media, so customers could even record Ultra HD to a slow mechanical USB hard disk.

With a timecode and sync generator built into all models, customers can stack multiple units for digital signage or multi channel recording. Each HyperDeck has dedicated outputs for reference and timecode, direct from the internal sync and timecode generators. The generators “free run” unless reference or timecode is connected to the inputs, and then generators will automatically lock. This means customers can loop from HyperDeck to HyperDeck to create perfectly timed array of recorders.

HyperDeck Studio supports multiple languages so customers don’t need to learn a new language just to use it. Customers get support for English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, German, French, Russian, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish, Polish and Ukrainian languages.

HyperDeck Studio records files that are compatible with virtually all post production software. Plus, if customers record in H.264, customers can upload files from HyperDeck Studio direct to streaming services such as YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, Twitter and more. Customers can use popular editing software such as DaVinci Resolve, Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro or Avid Media Composer, because HyperDeck uses the same file formats used in post production. Even VFX software such as Fusion and Adobe After Effects work with the files. Because HyperDeck records to disks formatted on computers, customers can simply mount the disk on any computer and start editing without needing to transcode or convert the files.

When customers need a portable broadcast solution, the HyperDeck Studio HD Mini model includes most features miniaturized into an elegant five-inch wide compact design that’s only one third of a rack unit wide. That means customers can fit three recorders in a single rack unit. Just use the optional Teranex Mini Rack Shelf and customers can mount the three units side by side, then bolt it into a standard equipment rack. Or customers can combine HyperDeck Studio Mini with other modules, such as a Teranex Mini Analog to SDI 12G to convert the input from analog to SDI, all in the same rack which is perfect for archive work. HyperDeck Studio HD Mini looks great when it’s not rack mounted and simply used by itself on a desktop.

“We think the new HyperDeck Studio models will offer customers a much better user experience, along with a more consistent feature set between models,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. “Even the lowest cost model is extremely powerful, as HyperDeck Studio HD Mini still has reference and timecode generators, H.264, ProRes and DNx recording, dual media slots, recording to USB disks and more. It’s very exciting.”

The new Blackmagic Web Presenter 4K model has an upgraded Ultra HD resolution H.264 encoder for live streaming in native Ultra HD. The new Web Presenter 4K is a compact design that includes a 12G-SDI input with down converter, so customers can select to stream in 1080p HD or 2160p Ultra HD resolutions. This new model also simulates a USB webcam when connected to computers, and the USB webcam feature also supports 1080p HD or 2160p Ultra HD resolutions.

Blackmagic Web Presenter 4K is available immediately from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide for US$695.

Blackmagic Web Presenter is a complete streaming solution that includes a professional hardware streaming engine for direct streaming via Ethernet to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and more. It’s just like a modern broadcast television transmitter for a new global streaming audience. Plus the built in USB connections work like a webcam, so customers can connect a computer and use any streaming software, or even Skype or Zoom. For redundancy, customers can stream to the internet via Ethernet or connect a 5G or 4G phone to use mobile data. Web Presenter also includes a technical monitoring output that includes video, audio meters, trend graphs and even SDI technical data.

Blackmagic Web Presenter supports the most popular streaming platforms. Plus the built in hardware streaming engine has been designed for live streaming at professional broadcast quality. That means customers get a self contained solution for live streaming that works without dropped frames. Customers only need to connect it to the internet. Setup is easy, as the Web Presenter Utility software lets customers select the streaming platform and update the streaming key.

Blackmagic Web Presenter is a self contained solution that includes a powerful hardware encoder, software for connecting to streaming platforms, and network connections. That means customers don’t need to buy an expensive computer or use complicated streaming software. Simply connect an SDI video source such as a live production switcher or a camera, then connect to the internet using the built in Ethernet connection. Or plug in a mobile phone to use mobile data. With settings built in for popular streaming platforms, customers simply need to enter a streaming key and press on air. Plus customers can simultaneously use the USB webcam output to connect to a computer, allowing other video software to be used.

If users are streaming from a remote location, or customers need a backup for the main Ethernet connection, customers can plug in an Apple or Android phone to connect to the internet via mobile data. For convenience, there are USB connections on both the front and rear panel that can be used for tethering phones. Plus it works with the latest high speed 5G phones, as well as 4G phones. Blackmagic Web Presenter will auto detect when a phone is connected and switch its internet connection to use it. Customers can select Ethernet or phone priority, which makes phone internet backup fully automatic.

Blackmagic Web Presenter features two USB connections that operate as a simple webcam source. That means customers can plug into any computer and work with any video software. The software is tricked into thinking the web presenter is a common webcam, but it’s really a broadcast quality SDI video source. That guarantees compatibility with any video software in full resolution 1080 HD or even 2160p Ultra HD quality, depending on the model. Web Presenter works with any video software including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype, Open Broadcaster, XSplit Broadcaster and more.

Traditional broadcast transmitters are critical equipment in a television station, however now the streaming server is just as critical because millions of viewers can be watching globally. To help, Blackmagic Web Presenter includes a feature rich technical monitoring output. The graphics based monitoring output includes a video view, audio meters with accurate ballistics, trend graphs for codec data rates and cache fill, plus a summary of the streaming settings and detailed SDI technical information. Plus the technical monitoring output works in full 1080 HD and outputs to both SDI and HDMI. That means customers can use an SDI router for monitoring multiple units, or connect a simple HDMI TV.

The Blackmagic Web Presenter Utility software provides a single place to manage multiple web presenters and to update the settings and software. Simply plug directly into the front of the web presenter’s USB connection, or connect using Ethernet so customers can configure remotely, which is important when users are managing multiple remote sites. The familiar menus and controls make it very easy to set up a live event, so customers can get started fast. Plus the front panel LCD menus have the same settings and controls. The Blackmagic Web Presenter Utility software is included free and runs on both Mac and Windows platforms.

Blackmagic Web Presenter includes a 12G-SDI input with support for all HD and Ultra HD formats up to 2160p60. A 12G-SDI loop output is included enabling customers to loop video through more than one web presenter, so customers can stream to multiple services. Blackmagic Web Presenter features Teranex conversion technology on the SDI input for incredibly clean looking video. Blackmagic Web Presenter takes the incoming HD or Ultra HD input signal and automatically converts it to high quality, low data rate 1080p HD or high resolution 2160p60 Ultra HD depending on the model, which is then sent to the hardware H.264 encoder for streaming.

Blackmagic Web Presenter includes redundant features to help ensure customers stay online. Customers get dual internet connections, so customers can connect to the internet using the built in Ethernet or a tethered phone for 5G or 4G mobile data. Plus the internet automatically switches in case of an outage. Or customers can use 2 separate units to stream to both the primary and secondary YouTube servers. With both AC and DC inputs, customers can use a broadcast battery pack for redundant power.

While Blackmagic Web Presenter can send video to a wide range of streaming services, it can also be used as a private broadcast SDI video link between studios. The ATEM Streaming Bridge is a video converter that lets customers receive the H.264 stream from Blackmagic Web Presenter and then convert it back to SDI video. This means customers can send video between remote locations across their local Ethernet network, or via the internet globally. That’s all possible due to the built in H.264 hardware codec that decodes the Web Presenter stream.

Blackmagic Web Presenter is based on the modular Teranex Mini design allowing desktop or rack use. The extremely portable design is only 5.5 inches wide, which means customers can mount 3 in a single rack unit, perfect when customers need to stream to multiple independent services all at the same time. Plus customers can combine Blackmagic Web Presenter with other products such as the ATEM Television Studio HD switcher for a live production and streaming solution in a single rack unit.

“We are so excited to have this new model of Blackmagic Web Presenter that adds streaming in both HD and Ultra HD” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “This means you can choose between lower data rates of HD, or full resolution Ultra HD at the click of a button. Plus the USB webcam feature has been upgraded to Ultra HD. This really is an exciting model and we cannot wait to see more live streaming in Ultra HD!”
